Synopsis
Grandfather, A H Ponnambalam, was teacher in Ceylon. Why he emigrated to Singapore. Mother, Lizzie N Ponnambalam, after schooling in Ceylon, joined parents in Singapore. Pleaded with father to study in King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1910. Graduated in 1914, worked in Federation of Malaya. Jaffna Tamil tradition of emigrating and getting government jobs in Malaya and Singapore.

Talked about mother's interest in helping Malay women in medical care. Mother returned to Ceylon in 1946 upon retirement. Opened up women's and children's clinics while serving in Johore. Fell ill in Ceylon in 1971, decided to return to Singapore for treatment. Died here.
