Fifth generation Peranakan. Male ancestry traced to Malacca. Paternal grandfather a bank clerk. Father, a clerk during Japanese Occupation, took up rubber brokering after the war. Maternal ancestry, also fifth generation and from Malacca. Maternal great-grandmother was Wak Menachi, a Chitty Malacca. Paternal grandfather educated in St Joseph's Institution. No Christian influence on family.
