Synopsis

Personal background. Attended Siglap Malay School until Primary 4. Active in school's sport activities. Stayed in Pulau Tekong after marriage during Japanese Occupation. A rubber tapper. Joined group of 10 islanders, cut palms to make kelong for Chinese towkay. Salary of group for 2 - 3 months assignment - $300; satisfied. Bomoh normally helped to defend the group from wild animal attack.

Synopsis

Difficult life during Japanese Occupation. Chinese girls main targets for Japanese army for enjoyment. Joined Japanese army with 30 other Malay islanders to survive. Main task to guard Japanese Military ammunition depot. Those found asleep were beheaded. Japanese army threatened to kill them in huge graveyard if they lose in war. Fortunately peace agreement signed after Americans bombed Hiroshima.

Synopsis

Back as rubber tapper after Japanese surrendered. Joined Singapore Volunteer Police Force for three years. Became fisherman and cleaner at Changi until retirement. Five children studied in Malay School. English school far away and expensive. Attended religious classes at old age. Sometimes taught children Quran reading. Good relationship with Chinese neighbours. Some islanders practised Malay customes during wedding.

Synopsis

Village headman (penghulu) acted as religious leader and liaison person for islanders. Also helped to solve problems. Village headman's help is sought if assistant headman unable to solve problem. Problem brought to police station if village headman failed to settle. Most Chinese islanders spoke Malay language fluently. Never joined any political party. Happy to live in multi-racial and modern state.
