His initiation into pro-communist trade unions. Activities organised by Singapore Rubber Employees' Union. Proposed to form a 'cell' with swearing ceremony but group declined proposal.

Soon after proclamation of Emergency, detained for six months. Close relationships between trade unions and secret societies. Biscuit Workers' Union affiliated with the '48' secret society. Life on St. John's Island. Father approached Lim Yew Hock for help to get him out of detention centre. In 1949 after his release, worked for Lim Yew Hock as a chauffeur.
