Born in China. Forebearers were farmers. Two elder brothers migrated to Philippines. Elder brothers' remittances helped to support family. Living conditions in village during childhood. Celebration of religious festivals. Received six months education. Went to Amoy at age of 14 to escape conscription in China.

Became a hawker selling dried prawns during Japanese Occupation. Worked as a waterfront labourer after the war. Learned to carry bales of rubber and bags of sago flour. Cheated by stevedore. Difficulties in getting his wages. Became a stevedore himself.
