Celebration of religious festivals. Received six months education. Went to Amoy at age of 14 to escape conscription in China.

Became a hawker selling dried prawns during Japanese Occupation. Worked as a waterfront labourer after the war. Learned to carry bales of rubber and bags of sago flour. Cheated by stevedore. Difficulties in getting his wages. Became a stevedore himself.
