His father first came to Singapore as labourer. Went to Ampenan (Indonesia) to do business. Returned to China. His father was kidnapped by bandits. Decided to migrate with family. Voyage with parents to Singapore. Moved to Ampenan for 2 years. Returned to Singapore. Father opened sundry goods shop in Yio Chu Kang. Attended private school. How he learnt Chinese and rudiments of accounting under his father's strict supervision.
