This antique coloured map covers the entire Far East from Java to Japan.  It is engraved for Linschoten's "Itinerario", a manual for sailing to the East Indies.  A cartouche in the upper right corner contains a bilingual title (Latin and Dutch) summarizing the territories depicted (in translation): "The true depiction or illustration of all the coasts and lands of China, Cochin China, Cambodia, Siam, Malacca, Arracan and Pegu".  In the sea are two finely engraved compass roses, sea-monsters and galleons, in China there are drawings of an elephant, camel, giraffe and rhinoceros.  Map shows Burma, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the Phillippines, around the coast of China to Korea and Japan.  Korea is shown as an almost round island, Japan is drawn as "shrimp shaped", Bali bears the name Galle and Sumbawa is called by its old name Iava Menor, an island called Os Papuas should be the beginning of Papua New Guinea and land at the right of map, known as Beach, where Australia would eventually be discovered, and others.

Second map of Southeast Asia contained in the Itinerario.  Map was derived from portolan chart compiled in 1573 by Fernao Vaz Dourado, Portuguese Cartographer and other Portuguese charts by Bartolomeu Lasso.
