[22 pages] Situation reports of post war Singapore, by the Chinese Affairs (CA) Division of the British Military Administration (BMA). Issues reported included the labour demonstrations, rising prices, political situations, re-opening of schools, factories resuming operations and so on.
According to the reports, there were lootings, abductions and private executions carried out in the name of recognised organizations such as the Anti-Japanese Army (AJA). Some of the Chinese asked if they could “borrow” the government’s name to help deter criminal activities on the ground.
On the other hand, some of the officers in the BMA felt that there should be quick actions against the war criminals and pro-Japanese persons, else the unhappiness of the Chinese population might grow.
CA also reported that the various groups of Chinese coming together for the common good, despite their difference in ideology. The groups included the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese banks, Anti-Japanese Union, organizations with communist ideals, Kuomintang etc.
