Singapore Teachers Union. Youth Cultural Festival Competition - 1960
74 pages – Crux of the contents is on the Singapore Teachers Union’s (STU) endeavour to raise funds for the National Theatre Fund (NTF), through a series of paying concerts, featuring the winners of the 1960 Youth Drama Music and Dance Festival, earlier organised by the STU itself. The STU proposed donating the nett proceeds of the concerts to the NTF, and sought Ministry of Culture’s (MC) assistance to waive various charges to be incurred –example, while MC was willing to waive the rental charges for Victoria Theatre, the venue of the performances, but Treasury allowed STU to proceed without seeking entertainment duty exemptions and donate the nett proceeds to the NTF.
Also in file are the background of the Youth Cultural Festival and a copy of a 60-page souvenir programme, produced for the1960 series of paying concerts. Briefly, the STU, with the approval of Ministry of Education, had been organising the Youth Cultural Festival as early as 1949. Initially restricted to the English language schools, the scope gradually expanded to include schools from the other three official language streams, the Universities and youth organisations. By 1960, dances were also introduced, participants were also allowed to perform as soloists or in groups, in four categories - junior, intermediate, senior and open. The 1960 souvenir programme registered a total number of 65 entries.
