Singapore Conference Hall matters relating to building accommodation
336 pages – Contents (from Oct 1971-May 73) are on the maintenance efforts taken by the Singapore Conference Hall to maintain the premises with Ministry of Culture (MC) providing the funds. Since it started operations in the 1960s, wear and tear of SCH was surfacing. To the SCH, maintenance was essential to ensure that the SCH would continue to be a suitable venue for international meetings. The Public Works Department and its contractors handled the maintenance works.
Apart from the external façade/area e.g. tilting main glass door, cracks in the façade, damaged driveways (due to earth subsidence and misuse), the SCH had to handle a host of other problems. They included rationalising and aligning the use of the office space; improvements to the concourse (change of windows) and exhibition areas to provide better ventilation; replacement of air conditioners; roof leaks leading to damage of property; replacement/repairs to auditorium seats. The vandalism in the public toilets, damage to sanitary fittings, leaking and choked toilets, and leaking rainwater drainpipes in the toilets, which were a constant source of complaints, was finally addressed when PWD diverted the drainpipes and decided to carry out regular maintenance inspections to pre-empt the problems.
