1964 Development Estimates: Purchase of 7 New Line-Composing Machines, 1964. (Under First Development Plan, 1961-64)
This file covers the purchase of line-composing machines at the Government Printing Office (GPO), in 1964. The choice was between the ‘Linotype’ and the ‘Intertype’.
Enclosures include invitations to quote, correspondences to and from the GPO, and quotations submitted, together with specifications of the proffered composing machines, such as working mechanisms and matrix capacity, and accompanying accessories like typefaces, fonts and special characters, in various languages. Also included in this file are brochures on composing machines such as the Linotype 78 by Linotype and Machinery Limited (pp. 32-36 and pp. 80-84), Elektron by Mergenthaler (pp. 86-90), Auxiliaries for Intertype Machines by Intertype Limited (pp. 119-213) and Linotype’s New 70 Series by Linotype and Machinery Limited (pp. 239-245).
It was mentioned that the new machines would allow the GPO to do Tamil typesetting—which existing line-composing machines at the GPO could not do—and hence “meet Government’s policy of paying equal attention to the four language streams” (p. 103). Another objective was to print the Hansard more quickly, with the aim of producing proof copies within 24-48 hours after each Sitting (p. 102).
