  • Synopsis :

This recording features a selection of Music from Singapore in the 1990/1991 ASEAN Exchange of Radio Programmes series. 1990 marks the 25th year of independence for Singapore with special events and concerts organised throughout the year. A Tamil song in the programme 'One People, One Nation, One Singapore' captures the celebratory mood during the year touching on the unity among the different races in Singapore. Also featured is a Malay song about kain songket sung by well-known Malay singer Saloma. Kain songket is a fabric that is popular with royalty and is used by brides and grooms during weddings. This hand woven material is used to make Malay outfits like the kebaya and the baju kurong which is normally worn by ladies. Men wear the baju kurong during festive and religious occasions. There are basically two types of baju kurong with different types of collars. The programme includes two songs in English performed by 24-year old Singaporean songwriter Jai who owns a recording company and produces jingles for commercials. The first 'Where Are We Going' searches for the meaning of life. Jai also sings a composition by Joshua Wan about dreams and lost love. Another piece in the programme 'The Singapore River Overture' was written for the Singapore Chinese Cultural Month and it chronicles the growth of Singapore.
