Synopsis :This selection of Music from Singapore in the 1990/1991 ASEAN Exchange of Radio Programmes features 'Suriram' and 'Return to Beauty World', two songs written and performed by foremost Singaporean singer and composer Dick Lee. Also featured is a Tamil song 'In 25 Years' about the growth of Singapore. It is written by Yasotha Somasundram. Two Malay songs are featured in the programme. They include 'Joget Gembira' about a popular Malay dance called the joget which came to Singapore from Melaka in 1511. The dance relies on music rather than intricate steps and is fun to watch. The other Malay song is a traditional number called 'Pulau Temasek'. 'Pulau' means island in Malay and Temasek was the old name for Singapore. The programme also features a Chinese instrumental piece inspired by the Tang poet Li Bai. 'Songs of the Mulberry Tree' is about a young woman's longing for her beloved.
