Synopsis :Three segments covered in this programme:
1. China Against The Wind - One of China's most enduring patriotic songs "The Sky Is Red" was sung during the Maoist era and the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. Today, the song seems out of touch with the times as the communist doctrine is being questioned in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. This segment looks at just how firmly communism is entrenched in present day China.
2. Tourism In Vietnam - for many people, Vietnam is synonymous with the wars that ravaged Indochina for decades. But Vietnam may be remembered for something else in 1990, the year that Hanoi has proclaimed as "Visit Vietnam year". The country is in desperate need of foreign exchange and attracting visitors is a simple way of earning hard currency. There is a drive towards making Ho Chi Minh city a holiday resort. But the lack of infrastructural back-up and the whole image of Vietnam during the war years may be an obstacle to potential tourists.
3. Unit Trusts: A Better Alternative? - despite the risks involved, the stock-broking business is soaring, with at least one in 10 Singaporeans investing in stocks and shares. There is an alternative investment which has rapidly broken ground overseas, but which is much less publicised and less popular in Singapore - the unit trusts. This segment compares their benefits and pitfalls from the perspective of the small investor.
