  • Synopsis :

    Three segments covered in this programme:  

    1.  India After Indira Gandhi 1917-1984   -   analyses the period of leadership of Mrs Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India who was assassinated on 31 October 1984, and the future for India after her death.

    2.   Interview With Fred Emery (Part II)   -   in this final part of the interview with Fred Emery, he reflects on the period after the British withdrawal from Singapore, the identity crisis facing Singapore after separation from Malaysia, and how Singapore has to build up its own defence force.  Mr Emery is a presenter with the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) 'Panorama' programme, and was previously based in Singapore as the Times of London's foreign correspondent. Part I of this interview with Friday Background was broadcast on 26 October 1984.

    3.   Our National Exhibition   -   looks at the exhibition which is not only about the artifacts and sophisticated gadgetry on display, but also a canvas of the past set off against the present and everyday living.
