  • Synopsis :

Cao Pi's officer, Hua Xin, deliberately remarks that Cao Zhi is too clever and will become a threat to Cao Pi if he does not remove him. He suggests putting Cao Zhi to a test and if he fails, Cao Pi then has an opportunity to get rid of him. Cao Zhi is called upon and the Prince orders him to compose a poem within the time taken to walk seven paces. Cao Zhi passes the first test and impresses everyone. Cao Zhi's final test is to composes a poem on the theme of their brotherhood, but without using the words "brotherhood" or "brother". Cao Zhi then recites the now famous "Seven-step poem" that comments on their relationship using beans as an analogy. He passes the test. Lady Bian tries to intervene but the Prince insists that the laws of the state cannot be ignored and Cao Zhi is degraded to the rank of Lord of Anxiang.
