Synopsis :In his speech Minister for Foreign Affairs S Rajaratnam examines 'the contributions Singapore Indians can make to Singapore culture'.
He stresses Indian culture is mainly to give Singapore Indians 'a sense of cultural identity and community', remaining essentially 'a communal private culture', but it should 'change and adjust to exist harmoniously with modern national culture' of Singapore. He warns there is a misconception that Indian culture is 'spiritual and mystical'.
He believes there is 'a great future for Indian culture in Singapore' if Singapore Indians could seek out 'those elements of thought and attitudes' which make Indian civilisations in the past 'create great science and technology' and which are relevant to a modernising Singapore.
Speaking before Minister is President of Indian Fine Arts Society of Singapore. The Society organises the symposium to mark its Silver Jubilee.
