  • Synopsis :

Recording contains speech (Chinese, English) by Minister of Finance, Dr Goh Keng Swee before he opens the Exhibition on Printing and Packaging Materials held at Conference Hall.

He begins by explaining that he is 'brought up in the classical tradition of economics' so that all present can understand his point of view'. The main subject of his speech is the one aspect of the printing industry which the Master Printers' Association and the Singapore General Printers Workers Union 'seem to be agreed upon', and that is the 'unhealthy competition' between the family-owned business (called 'mosquito-size firms' by the Union) and the 'modern well-equipped firms. He says distinctly that 'complaints of unhealthy competition will not find sympathetic hearing' from him. He is 'surprised there is 'no study of the export potential of the printing industry', and urges the industry to 'seriously consider' how it 'can enter into the world market for printed material'.

Speaking before Minister is Director, Economic Development Board (EDB), Lim Ho Hup (Cantonese, English). The exhibition is the 5th in a number of exhibitions sponsored by the Light Industries Services Unit, EDB.
