  • Synopsis :

    The 16mm film is not a packaged production but contains filming on Work Brigade Team Help Farmers to Subside Flood. There is no audio. Details of the footages are as follows:
    1) Damages:
    a) Vegetable plots, vegetables and plants damaged by flood;
    b) Trees uprooted, branches strewn on ground, covered under earth;
    c) Tracks - part of earth washed away, looks uneven;
    d) Banana trees still standing, with only few leaves, all torn;
    e) large areas of land are empty;
    2) Part Map of Singapore showing rivers and areas affected by flood;
    3) Rivers and Water:
    a) Several areas of water (film is dark, cannot see clearly);
    b) Water flowing down quite fast, branches, twigs, wood in the waters;
    c) Two jets of water shooting on to empty land;
    4) Digging out Earth from Water:
    a) Several men using changkul and shovel to dig out earth;
    b) Crane with shovel bucket dredges earth out and pile in heap on land;
    5) Work Done To Help Farmers:
    a) Tractor used to level uneven ground;
    b) Building gutter by side of road - using changful to create depths and lay rectangular tiles;
    c) Men working on timber building and zinc roof;
    d) Man inside deep drain, aligning huge cyclinders in straight row as they are rolled down;
    e) Use equipment with tank-like wheels and shovel bin to pick up earth in water and toss on lorry; once lorry is full, it moves away;
    f) Man building wall by side of road, woman brings concrete over in two pails;
    g) Another two still deepening gully with changkul;
    h) Man using cane rake sweeping broken branches, twigs and wood into one pile; another pile already set to burn;
    i) Builldings - building fully completed, one building wooden walls are put in place, painting one wall; another building walls are not up yet; third one working on base stone for vertical pole;
    j) Underneath road water flowing through circular tunnel;
    k) Lorry rolling up and tipping over its load of black earth; tractor moves over earth to flatten and spread across track;
    6) Piling:
    a) Several men standing on horizontal plans over space - to begin piling;
    b) Few men still digging deep down, earth is passed to women forming human chain;
    c) Framework of steel taking shape with deep hole below ground;

    7) Harvesting: plants cut by tractor;

    8) Motor Boat Engine:
    a) Two men picking up fishing gears make for boat in sea;
    b) One using paddle to manoeuvre boat out in sea, other man starts motor but cannot start after several tries;
    c) Carry motor to put outside house, cover it with sack;
    d) Two men in khaki uniform come by boat to check motor, one starting to write, other checks motor and does some fiddling, talking to owners;
    e) Owner pulls cable and motor starts; installs motor in boat, and two men set off to sea.
