  • Synopsis :

    The 16mm film on 'Poultry' is not a packaged production. It consists more of footages related to poultry farming. There is no audio, and date of filming is not given. Details of the footages are as follows:
    1)  Opening footage: long short of external view of  farm; official examing few fowls, eating time for free range fowls - pecking at feed in containers and above them suspended a metal cylinder containing their water;
    2)  From collecting eggs in hen coops to yellow chicks: work done include putting and transferring eggs to various types of trays, putting them in wooden, then metal shelves with doors, putting small containers of liquid inside shelves, eggs sorted by machinery, stamping on eggs, throwing away empty shells after hatching;
    3) Chicks are weighed one by one;
    4) Spray on chicks sitting in wooden trays: preparing liquid in spray - syringe extract from phial, pump into bottle, and after shaking pour liquid into spray; cover is put over chicks;
    5) In shed - activities include: hose spray on floor and roof of shed: first liquid pours into container, turn on a power point and spraying begins; floor is mopped; red bell-like item - being wiped and hang from ceiling; bags of stuff - hen feed - pour on ground and spread out with a cane rake;
    6) Erecting circle with low 'wall' inside shed: last piece of 'wall' put up to complete circle; conical shape metal object within circle, plug into power point and adjust dial on object;
    7) Big sheets of (plastic?) to line wall and inside of roof of open 'shed', work done by a few men; external view to show materials put in place;
    8) Pouring from one to another container:
    a) Outside shed - man pouring from one container into white pot and then into 3rd container;
    b) Inside shed - another man pouring from container into another container on a horizontal piece with fire as smoke seen coming out;
    c) Outside shed - pouring from bottle on to small rectangle on ground, then some liquid poured from pail; sign in English/Chinese reads 'Please Dip', legs in boots of man step into rectangle and then walk forward;
    9) In circle erected:
    a) Man pouring feed into longish trough, 2 red bell-like containers also put in;
    b) Man carrying two trays of chicks and put them in;
    c) Man in white coat and wearing mask, standing outside circle, spraying on chicks with gadget held in hand;
    d) Man remove one panel of 'wall' of circle;  
    10) Inside shed, man, with cane rake, mixing brown and black looking stuff; chicks pecking away at few metal feeds;
    11) Man rubbing red bell-like containers and shaking liquid from them; chicks moving over to drink from them;
    12) Two men examining two full grown hens round wings, dabbing on them from small bottle, and with needle jab under wings;
    13) Inside shed - brown and black stuff on ground, half-grown hens running on stuff;
    14) Examining hens - man with big syringe jabbing different part of each hen held by two men;
    15) Weighing hens balanced from tied legs, weight recorded;
    16) Outside shed:
    a)  2 men carrying out several huge wooden trays and put on ground;
    b)  One man after another walking out holding two to four hens, passing to two other men who put them in the wooden trays;
    c)  3 men weighing hens, 2 taking them down;
    d)  trays loaded on to lorry and move off;
    17) Packing whole hens into white plastic bags:
    a)  Hens, feathers plucked: hanging from hooks, female worker clipping off some parts;
    b)  Another female worker then put them on a moving roller, 2 female workers pack them into plastic bags and close them;
    18) Packing hens by various parts:
    a)  One female worker cutting off wings of hens hanging from hooks, another cutting off drumsticks;
    b)  Wings and drumsticks packed separately in plastic bags, then wieghed;
    c)  Plastic bags sealed, weighed, and placed in big cardboard trays.
