Synopsis :The 16mm film is not a packaged production but contains filming of several aspects of farming - Nursery, Vegetable Farm, Poultry, Abattoir, E W Barker's Visit. There is no audio. Details of the footages are as follows:
1) Nursery:
a) Rows of plants in pots; man digging at soil with stick in one pot, adding soil now and then;
b) Different plants - marigold in pots, flowering bush growing in ground, crotons,
c) Soil in square box - man pushing 'seed' in hole in soil;
d) Man trimming leaves from long stalk, then cuts it in two segments;
e) Man putting small plant taken from pot into small black bag, then putting it with other black bags;
f) Watering plant in pot;
g) Soil/Earth:
Man pushing hand trolley with earth to thrown on to pile; pail of soil; pile of burnt soil;
Man adding soil from rattan basket on pile of earth, being burnt, adding wood to fire;
Heap of earth - man scooping some into box, shakes box to sift out fine earth, put box aside;
h) Plants with long red leaves in ground - man digging out a few, trimming roots, lops off top;
2) Vegetable Farm:
a) Types of Vegetables: leafy ones growing in ground, very close together; green tomatoes;
b) Watering vegetables - with long pump operating like bicycle pump;
c) Planting/Replanting: separating vegetables spacing out, balancing on narrow length of wood over plot; putting baby plants in watery soil, horizontal and in straight rows;
d) Chye sim on vegetable plot - man adding fertiliser pellets to vegetables;
e) Title: Lady's finger;
f) Plant Pests/Diseases: chye sim leaves with holes; caterpillar crawling across leaf, sideways; small, white creature, like spider on stalk;
3) Poultry:
a) Metal tray with chickens, feathers plucked and cleaned;
b) Several people working at hens, like packing in plastic bags;
c) Hens stacked in rows; scores of hens hanging, with leg, feet and head removed;
d) External view: Ministry of Defence jeep rolling up; basket of hens carried out by two men in uniforms, loaded on jeep;
4) Abattoir:
a) Pigs:
Slaughtered, hanging on moving belt; pumping water with hose;
Removing internation organs - some tossed awy, others pused down some machine; sorting on ground, tying some up, other in containers;
One man rubber stamping on body several times;
Cutting open lengthwise, another man removing internal organs, then separating them;
Cleaning up the body;
Equipment - circular containers open at both ends, pig walks into it;
Cutting off lower trotters;
Slaughtered pig rolling out, immediately hang up by hind legs;
b) Cows:
Several men cutting up slaughtered cows into different parts;
Pulling up cow by machine;
Unloading cows from ships; then walking on to lorry, man tying each by rope to side of lorry;
Walking cows, one at a time, up ramp for weighing; then walking to shed which already has several cows;
Some parts cut with rotary saw operated by two men;
Hanging up carcass on moving belt by legs;
Internal organs - putting them back into stomach, or hanging all on one spike;
Removing skin off body;
c) Goats:
Hanging up carcass; skin removed off back and left dangling over head;
Goats standing in corner, pulling one away;
Removing internal organs; sorting them
d) Sharpening knife at electrical sharpener;
5) Construction Work:
a) Open area:
Man laying bricks, square round an opening with water deep down;
Two men with changkul working on drain;
Tractor levelling ground strewn with earth;
Tractor unloading brown earth load next to pile of earth;
Women scooping earth into baskets, throwing on other side of road, then tractor reversing over to level earth;
b) Buildings:
Man working on window;
Man painting outside wall of building;
Row of cubicles - each with brown soil;
Completed single storey building;
At entrance with wire fencing - security house;
6) E W Barker's Visit:
a) PPD jeep driving along newly finished road, security directing jeepk
b) Getting out E W Barker and Cheng Tong Fatt; minister introduced to three officials, press in background;
c) Places shown to Minister
Walking from shed towards open sea (one ship in waters);
Inside building - one official briefing; another room - completely empty;
Jeep taking Minister to another building where working is still going on; inside room, Mr Cheng talking; in next room - Minister looking at plan;
Entering yet another room, not completed yet, but has some equipment installed, like cyclinder for slaughtering pigs;
Taking jeep to yet another area, standing outside, looking at plan again;
Moving to building with cubicles;
d) Minister talking to press, Mr Cheng looking on;
e) End of visit - Minister shaking hands, getting to jeep with Mr Cheng and other officers;
7) Footages after Visit:
a) Filming outside area which shows completed building, incomplete ones, men and women doing various work at construction site; road outside of building site which is completed and street lamps installed;
8) Animals:
a) Two vehicles with several rattan baskets, one driving off;
b) Back of men slaughtering pigs;
c) Close up of sheep;
d) Vehicle of Hoe Seng;
e) Cows walking down ramp of lorry;
f) Inside building - slaughtered cow hanging up;
g) Outside building - unloading bigs in basket; few pigs push to walk on;
