Synopsis :The 16mm film is not a packaged production but contains filming of several aspects of farming - Eggs and Chicks, Van Kleef Aquarium, Mushrooms, E W Barker, Farms, Plant Pests And Diseases. There is no audio.
Details of the footages are as follows:
1) Eggs:
a) Heads of cocks, crowds of chicks, hens in coops pecking at food in front of them; black feather cocks, white feather hens roaming on ground within enclosed area;
b) With small hand-held torchlight examine eggs close up;
c) Gadget, electrically operated, pick up whole tray of eggs and put down on moving platform;
d) Three female workers put eggs rolled out in front of them on trays, trays stacked up;
e) Eggs in metal trays - put in with stacks of similar trays in cabinet with doors;
f) Man collecting eggs outside coops;
2) Chicks
a)) Man putting 10-11 eggs into rectangular trays, put over them metal covers with holes; lift up cover, in tray chicks just hatched;
c) Examine chick with hand-held gadget;
d) Another person jab at head of chick with syringe;
3) Van Kleef Aquarium & Fish:
a) Several types of fish and corals in display tanks;
b) External view of Aquarium building from different angles;
c) Nameboard of Aquarium;
d) Man in white coat lowering narrow tube over top tank among rows of small fish tanks;
e) Close up of seahorse;
f) Close up of display on wall of fish over tortoise;
4) Mushrooms:
a) Different types;
b) Man sprinkling with hand brown earth over pile of dry leaves with small mushrooms;
c) Man breaks up rectangular piece into small bits and put on pile of dry leaves with small mushrooms at intervals; sprinkling white powder on pile;
d) Man spreading out 'leaves' over other materials in between small mushrooms;
5) E W Barker and Cheng Tong Fatt with four people at orchid plants section;
6) Several men cutting up banana trunks into halves and smaller parts;
7) Farms - vegetables/plants include:
a) Chillis hanging from branches; tapioca plants, lady's fingers plants and some with yellow flowers, gourd, big leaf vegetable, chye sim;
b) Tree with buttress roots;
c) Plucking long beans by hands;
d) Man turning earth at vegetable plot;
e) Planting baby vegetable plants in vegetable plots;
8) Farms - watering/spraying include:
a) Man scoops white substance in pail and stire with stick, then pours into spray container;
b) Spraying low plants growing in ground;
c) Man, wearing mask, pouring orange-colour liquid into container, then pumps water; another pour from watering can into container, while another man with mask puts on gloves;
d) Man sprinkling some stuff with small pan over empty vegetable plots; another sprinkling with hand over another plot;
e) Man examining some pellets in bottle;
f) Spraying on vegetable, container is carried on back;
g) Watering vegetables and plants with hose and two cans suspended on pole across man's shoulders;
h) Man pouring dark-coloured liquid into small round container;
i) Spraying big leaves with long handle spray, operating like bicycle pump;
9) Animals:
a) Cleaning pigs by playing hose on them;
10) Plant Pests/Diseases:
a) Caterpillar crawling on underside of leaf which has dark patches, on stalk, on chilli plants, on papaya fruit;
b) Other leaves with small pest, grasshopper, beetle;
c) Small pest boring into plant stalk; insect with long legs on another stalk;
d) Several dark-coloured ants on long stem;
e) Small little white/yellow 'egg' on underside of leaf; dark brown objects on other leaves;
f) Snail on leaf and on soil; brown skin pests digging into earth;
f) Purple colour insects on plants;
g) Dried up stalk, leaves with lots of brown hatches;
h) White insects crawling on soil, another yellow flower of lady's fingers;
i) Holes in several leaves of vegetables, also that of chye sim, so much holes leaves almost shapeless;
j) Creatures crawling out from inside soil;
k) Lady's finger - shrivelled, leaves dry up, others with holes, brown and white patches;
l) Green tomatoes with limp leaves and white spots, red colour 'capsicum' with white spots;
m) Ants, rather big - hundreds crawling on bud and stalk of papaya
11) At Market:
a) Vegetable stalls in open section, buyers milling around;
12) At Nursery:
a) Man fills small black bag with soil;
b) Pot with plant of long stalks on bench, there is grafting on plant;
c) Watering with hose rows and rows of pots on low benches;
d) Man turning earth with changkul, putson hand trolley, which is then wheeled away;
e) Plants with long, narrow leaves, dark purplish red - man digging out plants, then trims roots and snips off top half with leaves; replants low stalk in another plot;
f) Man working on pot growing croton, digging soil in pot, adding some soils;
13) At PPD Extension Service Centre at Sembawang on Farm Licensing:
a) Sign showing name of centre, another duration and working hours for farm licensing;
b) Officers at work; table outside building with men and women round him; several people walking towards low building;
14) Farm Buildings:
a) Several houses of attap roofs;
b) Several shed like buildings with zinc roofs;
c) Shed with sloping roofs of attap coming down to almost ground level, there are no walls.
